3.1 Introduction

Congratulation in advance!

You're about to learn the one thing that 99% of all guitarists either never do, or do incorrectly. 1/2 of what that 'musical feeling' is comes from this ability to read music. Like everything, it will take some time, but the instruction will lay it out to help you get used to how we will read in Fretscapes, then walk you through playing real music.

You'll also recognize that the music and exercises we're learning are oddly 'familiar sounding' - this is, of course, intentional. The alternative would have been songs like 'Twinkle, Twinkle', but that wouldn't motivate you to WANT TO READ. Part of the fun of learning this way is that I love to hear students guess what song they think I'm imitating, so if you recognize anything we're playing please feel free to comment the name of the song you think it's from - call that extra credit!

Before continuing

Please take a few moments to refresh your memory on the music staff and rhythms, if needed. We will be building off of these beginning ideas substantially over the new few weeks.

You'll notice a new page attached here called "The Fret Legend" - This is an important page for you to keep handy so please print it out, if possible, and keep it close. We'll be going over how to use this in the following section.
